Special Note: At times, Shea Butter can become grainy. There is no problem with the butter and is a natural occurrence – it just means that your butter may have melted and solidified at different rates which can cause graininess. If you’ve noticed your Shea butter being grainy in your finished products, you may need to temper it before you use it.

To temper Shea Butter:

  • Using a double boiler, melt the Shea Butter completely and hold at 175° F (80C) for about 15 minutes.
  • Pour into a container and place in the freezer immediately. The goal is to cool it quickly so that everything solidifies uniformly.
  • Once it is a solid, remove from freezer. Don’t store it in the freezer; you can keep this at room temperature. You can then measure and use it!
  • There are different tempering techniques out there, however, this method seems to work the best.

PREPARE THE WHIPPED BUTTER:
Please note that it is not necessary to add a preservative to this Whipped Butter because it does not contain any water. Weighing the ingredients is more accurate and you will consistently be able to repeat the same recipe. A good, basic recipe for Whipped Shea is 80% Butter and 20% liquid oils.

Step 1: Weigh out the following:
80% Shea Butter: 12.8 ounces of Shea Butter
19% Oil: 3.04 ounces of Apricot Kernel Oil
1% Fragrance Oil: .16 ounces Fragrance Oil (which is approximately 4 ml) (for this batch, we used Paris Nights

Because this is a leave on product, don’t add more than 1% of fragrance oil.

Step 2: Place your Shea Butter into the mixing bowl.

Step 3: Slowly add Apricot Kernel Oil to the mixing bowl. This oil is a luxurious, light, quick absorbing, moisturizing oil. It’s a perfect oil to compliment the Shea butter!

Step 4: Mix on slow using a wire whisk attachment for about 1 minute. Add 1% Fragrance oil to the mixing bowl, then increase slowly to high and allow to mix for 7 minutes.

TIP: Half way through the mixing — use a spatula to scrape down the sides then continue to mix.

Step 5: After 7 minutes, check the mixed Shea butter. It should be smooth, fluffy and thick.

Step 6: Scoop into jars, cap and you’re all set! Perfect for soothing skin!
